Coffee Shop Review: One Plus Piece, Melbourne, Australia

As a child, I used to run home eagerly to catch my favorite animes on TV, such as Princess Sarah, The Dog of Flanders, and Ghost Fighter. Growing up, my siblings and I practically lived for those Filipino-dubbed Japanese animated series. While some habits from childhood faded with time, my awareness of anime’s global popularity remained, particularly with shows like “One Piece” hailed as one of the best animes in recent years. Despite not watching it, I was aware of its existence thanks to its worldwide popularity. So, you can imagine my excitement when I discovered a themed cafe inspired by “One Piece” in the heart of Melbourne: One Plus Piece.

One Plus Piece, a quirky cafe established in 2015, is a haven for anime fans and foodies alike, seeking a unique dining experience.

Stepping inside the cafe felt like a heartwarming journey to my childhood. A massive mural of “One Piece” characters adorned the left-side wall, immersing visitors in the anime’s world. Strings of pennant flags, bearing the anime’s logo, danced overhead, adding to the lively atmosphere. Life-size statues of beloved characters, toys, posters, and other memorabilia further complemented the decor, creating an anime enthusiast’s paradise.

Wagyu

My friend opted for the Wagyu dishโ€”a generous serving of premium sliced 9+ wagyu, accompanied by pickled radish, edamame, egg, and garlic soy sauce. I wasn’t able to try it as I don’t consume beef, but my friend described the dish as a delightful explosion of flavors.

Eggs Anyway on Sourdough

Price: USD 9.00

On the other hand, I decided to try the “Eggs Anyway,” a typical breakfast dish of sourdough with avocado smash, sea salt, and lime. Though enjoyable, I found the avocado smash a tad bland and felt that a touch more seasoning would have elevated the dish. Nevertheless, the sourdough was perfectly toasted, and the eggs were cooked to perfectionโ€”exactly how I like them.

โ˜• One Plus Piece drinks

Almond Latte

Price: USD 3.13

My friend had her usual, almond latte, a lovely creamy concoction.

Coffee Milkshake

Price: USD 5.33

For drinks, I wanted to try their milkshake as it’s one of the things this cafe is known for. They call them 1+piece Freak Shakes and they look so flamboyant, I don’t even know how one can manage to consume them.

But I decided to order a more conservative choiceโ€”a refreshing glass of coffee milkshake. The blend of coffee and creaminess proved to be a delightful treat without overwhelming the taste buds.

Even as a non-fan of this anime, my visit to One Plus Piece was an enthralling experience. The cafe’s charming interiors, delectable dishes, and overall vibrant vibe made it a memorable venture well worth the visit.
