Coffee Tonya Review, Makati, Philippines

My friend Cai and I met in Makati while typhoon Paeng was busy wreaking havoc in the country. I didn’t plan to go to Makati; I was heading to Sampaloc for my grandma’s wake, but Paeng ruined my plans, so I ended up spending the night over at the same hotel where Cai was staying. We agreed to have coffee at a nearby roastery/coffee shop, Coffee Tonya.

Coffee Tonya is a Japan-based coffee roaster with a great selection of coffee beans (over 50 varieties) and tea leaves. It’s also a cafe and a retail store selling coffee equipment and specialty goods.

🖼️ Coffee shop – Coffee Tonya ambiance and interiors

Coffee Tonya interiors

Coffee Tonya has industrialized-style interiors with dark colors. Personally, it wasn’t to my taste; it was disordered and too somber for me. Also, I noticed they didn’t remove the exhaust pipes from the old restaurant.

It looks more like a bar than a coffee shop. But then again, they brew their beer, so maybe that’s the design they were going for.

🥯 Coffee shop – Coffee Tonya food

Fried Mozzarella with Marinara sauce

Price: USD 3.98 (PHP 230)

Coffee Tonya mozzarella

I don’t think I’ve seen mozzarella sticks as gigantic as these, so I was surprised when it was served on our table. I don’t know if they used pure mozzarella and no extenders because I found it insipid. Maybe if it’s at least faintly salty, I would have liked it more.

The marinara sauce was well made; it had that rich, velvety texture with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Unfortunately, the marinara sauce did nothing to improve the flavor of the fried mozzarella sticks. But this was an opinion my friend didn’t share because he quickly devoured two bars; he loved the marinara sauce so much.

Mango ice cream

Price: USD 3.03 (PHP 175)

Coffee Tonya mango ice cream

I wanted the matcha ice cream, but it was unavailable, so we had the mango ice cream instead. It was so creamy and delectable that I ate most of it. Furthermore, the real mango toppings and whipped cream were a nice touch.

Cafe mocha

Price: USD 2.59 (PHP 150)

Coffee Tonya cafe mocha

I had high expectations for the coffee because Coffee Tonya is a roastery. But I’m happy to report that they didn’t disappoint. The cafe mocha is luscious, long, and thick.
