Coffee Shop Review: Bon Appetit Cafe at 1120 House, Makati, Philippines

The day began on a sour note. My friends and I were unhappy where we were seated, at a small table under the trees with no umbrella. The trees weren’t enough to shield us from the sun, and the leaves kept falling on us; it was so bothersome. They said there were no more seats inside, so we had to stay in the al-fresco area. There were four big tables outside; all had patio umbrellas and purifiers, but they were also reserved.

There were four small round tables, which we realized, may have been placed as an afterthought just to accommodate additional customers. And that’s where they put us. Usually, I don’t make a fuss where I’m seated, but at that moment, I couldn’t help but feel like we were not given fair treatment. I asked my friends, “Does it look like we couldn’t pay for the food?”

Look, I’m not saying we were discriminated against; I reckon those small tables were put there so they could accept more guests. But nevertheless, it still felt like we didn’t get the same treatment as other guests because the small tables didn’t have patio umbrellas and had no purifiers.

We didn’t order right away to let off some steam. It was a sweltering day; I was sweating through my linen shirt. We asked if they could move us inside or, at the very least, to one of those big tables outside; the staff said they would check, but we soon realized that it would never happen.

Eventually, we accepted our fate and ordered our food.

🖼️ Coffee shop – Bon Appetit Cafe ambiance and interiors

I may have comments about some other things, but there’s nothing wrong I could say about the interiors and design of this place. It looks so chic and classy that I wanted so badly to dine there. Now that I mentioned it, make a reservation at least one or two weeks before your visit to get a table inside.

When you go there, check out Floret. Upon entering the door, you will see it on the left side of the room. The floral shop is so beautiful it immediately changed my sour mood.

They sell fresh and dried flowers and other home decor and essentials, such as plates, cups, and flower vases.

I also liked the staff who was manning Floret; he was very accommodating and even offered to take our pictures. I quipped that it seemed like he’s done many of these before because he shot several photos, to which he replied, “Yes, ma’am, sanay na po,” (I’m used to it).

💻 Coffee shop – Bon Appetit Cafe WiFi

You’d think in a place as posh as this, there would be WiFi, but nope, they don’t.

🔌 Coffee shop – Bon Appetit Cafe electrical outlets

When I asked one of the staff if they had electrical outlets, he immediately tried to find me one. I just told him that I didn’t need it; I only asked for the sake of this blog.

🥯 Coffee shop – Bon Appetit Cafe food

Since I got friends there, I have more food to review, so let’s get started.

Sweet potato fries

Price: USD 1.61 (PHP 95)

Bon Appetit at 1120 House, Makati, Philippines - Sweet Potato Fries

We ordered a side of sweet potato fries, and I liked it. I was expecting it would be very sweet, but it’s not. You have to eat it immediately because it gets soggy if you let it sit for too long.

Filipine crab fat pasta

Price: USD 6.69 (PHP 395)

Bon Appetit at 1120 House, Makati, Philippines - Filipine Crab Fat Pasta

This is the first time I’ve eaten something with crab fat after a year of becoming a vegetarian, so I’d forgotten that I wasn’t a fan of crab fat.

I had the pasta in a take-home box because I couldn’t finish it. The next day, I reheated and ate it; to my surprise, it tasted better. I know, I’m weird, not sure what happened, but given that I ended up liking it, albeit late, I can recommend this pasta dish.

Beef tapa

Price: USD 9.57 (PHP 565)

Bon Appetit at 1120 House, Makati, Philippines - Gourmet Beef Tapa

I don’t eat meat, so I couldn’t try this, although I did eat the side fruits and loved it. My friend liked the dish; she was just confused because the presentation looked Japanese, but the dish is Filipino, yet we’re in a French-named restaurant. So yeah, that was confusing.

Tres leches cupcake

Price: USD 2.03 (PHP 120)

Bon Appetit at 1120 House, Makati, Philippines - Tres Leches Cupcake

This has got to be one of the weirdest-tasting cupcakes ever. It had that weird savory flavor that we couldn’t pinpoint. My friend said that they probably used a spice (which she couldn’t identify) that gave this cupcake that strange flavor. I don’t really care; all I know is that a cupcake should be sweet, not savory.

Dark chocolate cheesecake

Price: USD 4.49 (PHP 265)

I’m not sure what to make of the presentation of this cake because it looked like the cake had almost slid off the plate, then they saved it in the nick of time; that’s why it looks like this, lol.

The cake is very rich, not something you can finish quickly in one sitting. It’s made of 50% dark Belgian chocolate and is dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free. Personally, I wasn’t a fan, but that’s because I’m not really fond of chocolate cakes, and I’m more of a chiffon instead of a cheesecake kind of gal.

☕ Coffee shop – Bon Appetit Cafe drinks

I ordered brewed coffee, but it never came. By the time I realized they didn’t bring me my coffee, I was already full from the food I had eaten, so I didn’t bother following it up. I managed to take sips from my friends’ drinks, though.

Cappuccino

Price: USD 2.46 (PHP 145)

Bon Appetit at 1120 House, Makati, Philippines - Cappuccino

My friend and I agreed; this drink was painfully bland. I’m not sure what happened here and how they make their coffee, but I don’t recommend ordering this.

Fresh mango juice

Price: USD 3.22 (PHP 190)

Bon Appetit at 1120 House, Makati, Philippines - Mango Juice

The mango juice wasn’t thick, so I’m not sure if it was freshly squeezed; nevertheless, I found it delicious.

🥘 Coffee shop – Bon Appetit Cafe at 1120 House menu

Their menu is pretty extensive so I didn’t bother listing down everything. You can see their menu from this link.

Author’s Note: Coffeehan’s scale pertains to Mara’s general feel about a coffee shop. The rating is based on her personal opinion, which is primarily influenced by the coffee’s taste more than the place’s aesthetics. The rating doesn’t aim to change, nor does it represent another person’s view of the coffee shops featured on this blog.
