Coffee Shop Review: Cong Caphe, Nan Thoh, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi, Vietnam
I met my friend Joanna on my first day in Hanoi, and after we had that delicious dinner at Cha Ca La Vong, she recommended this coffee shop in front of a cathedral. Joanna is currently based in Hanoi; she definitely has a local insight I’d like to fully tap into to enjoy my short time here. She told me that she’d like me to try a communist-themed coffee shop called Cong Caphe.
Wait what? A communist-themed coffee shop? That sounds wild; I must check it out.
Clearly, I have yet to see it all.

📍Coffee shop Cong Caphe – location

Cong Caphe is a popular coffee shop chain in Vietnam, with the first store opening in 2007 along Trieu Viet Vuong street. Today, there are several branches all over Vietnam, 26 of which are in Hanoi. The one that I visited was along P. Nha Tho, in front of St. Joseph’s Cathedral.
Booking.comThe name “Cộng, was taken from the official name of Vietnam, CỘNG HOÀ XÃ HỘI CHỦ NGHĨA VIỆT NAM (The Socialist Republic of Vietnam).
🖼️ Coffee shop Cong Caphe – ambiance and interiors

Most coffee shops in the Philippines, especially the newer ones, have adopted the modern minimalist design. I used to love them until I noticed they were starting to look the same. But the coffee shops in Hanoi are different, and Cong Caphe, for one, has a theme, old Vietnamese military or communist, as Joanna said.
Tall ceiling, low tables and chairs, and the walls are painted in dark, military green color. The lights emit a soft yellowish glow that is not best for picture-taking but succeeds in casting that vintage-effect glow. And the antique decors brought it all together; it made me feel like I was back in time.
💻 Coffee shop Cong Caphe – WiFi
Cong Caphe has WiFi, but I didn’t get to use it.
🥯 Coffee shop Cong Caphe – food
Yoghurt with cocoa
Price: USD 1.69 (VND 40,000)

This is my friend’s favorite, yoghurt with cocoa. After she mixed it, it turned into a gooey, dark dessert that was tangy and slightly sweet. It had such an interesting flavor; definitely worth a try.
☕ Coffee shop Cong Caphe – drinks
Coconut coffee
Price: USD 2.07 (VND 49,000)

I had one of Cong Caphe’s bestsellers, coconut coffee. I hardly noticed the coconut, and I don’t know if that’s a good thing considering this is called coconut coffee. It had a subdued, sweet taste, which I liked, but I wish the coffee flavor were stronger.
🫘 Coffeehan Scale
I give Cong Caphe 4 coffee beans.
