Cupcakes by Sonja

My former officemate used the term “overrated” when she described Cupcakes by Sonja. This is not to say that she didn’t find their cupcakes pleasing, it’s just that she didn’t think there was anything special about them. This conversation happened a year ago, but I didn’t get to try Sonja until recently.

After the McCormick event, Ana and I decided to check the rest of Bonifacio Global City and that’s how we spotted this cutesy store of Cupcakes by Sonja. I love the interiors, looks like you are in a kitchen right in the comforts of your own home, the floral wallpaper, the chalkboard for the menu, and the cupcakes on the glass shelves, everything looked so cute!

Since we went there late, there were fewer cupcakes to choose from, most had been sold out already. Prior to ordering, I took some pictures of the place and the cupcakes.

We were so stuffed we only managed to buy one cupcake each. I had PB&J (peanut butter and jelly) for PHP75 while Ana had Mocha Motion for PHP 62. Each cupcake was put inside this cute blue box.

About the cupcakes, I like the fact that they were visually appealing. Based on the menu they also have a wide array of flavors. As I mentioned though, Ana and I only got to try a single flavor each. According to Ana, and I quote,

“Masyado siyang mahal sa 62…di lumevel ang lasa sa price, masyadong matamis.”

(For 62 pesos I find it too expensive…the taste was not at par with the price, it was too sweet.) She added that it was not the kind that would make you ask for more.

I would have to agree, at least with what I had, the PB&J. It was good, the cake was moist, dense, with rich chocolate flavor, but I didn’t find it memorable if you know what I mean. I found the tartness of the grape-flavored jelly a bit intense but I liked the peanut butter frosting, it was a bit gritty and not too sweet.

Still, I don’t think two flavors are enough to make a thorough assessment about the bakery so there’s a good possibility I’d come back to try other flavors.

Cupcakes by Sonja by the way, accepts orders for customized cakes and you may also hold a party in their bakeshop. Check out their website for more information.

Berry delight looks pleasing; the others look second-rate, cheap cupcakes that can be bought for only around 15 to 20 pesos in any locally unknown bakery.

well it should look better considering the fact that it's worth 100 bucks.

I used to love Sonja's cupcakes when they first opened. But now, the taste is just not the same. Parang they changed the ingredients or substituted cheaper ones. The change is very noticeable, hindi na worth yung price sa taste unlike before. I tried it 2x recently just to make sure that I did not make a mistake. But the change in taste is very distinct. Sayang…. Hope Sonja Ocampo will be able to read your post and our comments so she can bring her products back to how they were before.

Ganun ba? So tama pala ang judgment namin ng friend ko, I thought hindi lang masarap yung flavors na na-order namin. I wish that they'd see this post too kung ganun para they can improve the quality of their cupcakes.
